The reputation of restaurants, bars and hotels are quickly destroyed by public sightings of cockroaches on the premises, and especially in food preparation areas their control is essential for food safety compliance.
Cockroaches spread disease and bacteria onto surfaces and food they contact, with can easily cause food poisoning. This is why they can pose such a problem around the home too.
The two main cockroach species in the UK have different characteristics, habits and life cycles, meaning accurate identification is required to provide the correct effective treatment. Our knowledge of their biology, combined with the latest treatments, enable us to rapidly bring a cockroach infestation under control. We have suitable bait treatments for use around sensitive sites such as food preparation areas, and monitor the effectiveness of all the treatments we apply.
German cockroaches (Blattella germanica) grow to around 16-24mm and grow and reproduce rapidly. Eggs can develop into adults in 5-7 moults, in as little time as 1-3 months. Adults will live between 3-6 months, with the female carrying the eggs around until they are nearly ready to hatch. Identified by the two dark longitudinal stripes, German cockroaches prefer warm, humid areas and are able to easily climb smooth vertical surfaces.
The Oriental cockroach (Blatta orientalis) are the most common type found in the UK. Growing to 20-32mm, they are large and find it difficult to climb smooth surfaces. They can also tolerate cold conditions and live in outbuildings and sewers. Very shiny dark brown, almost black in appearance, adult Oriental cockroaches can live for around 6 months after taking from 6 months to 2 years to reach adulthood.
The female will carry her eggs for around 30 hours, then deposit them on or near a food source. In ideal conditions the eggs will hatch in around six weeks, but the can remain dormant for much longer periods in unfavourable conditions. This can make control a much longer process than for German cockroaches, requiring repeated treatments and ongoing monitoring to check for any new hatchlings emerging and re-establishing a colony.
Both types of cockroach tend to inhabit inaccessible parts of buildings, making it pretty much impossible for non-professional treatments to work. We use different treatments for each species, in different formulations to suit the situation following our initial survey and ongoing monitoring.
